The 41-year-old free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers has officially announced his intention to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, bringing an end to the off-season drama. However, betting lines have not been significantly impacted by the news.
Reports: Steelers One-Year Contract
The news was announced this afternoon by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Rodgers is agreeing to a one-year contract. No financial information.
Having just finished two unimpressive seasons with the New York Jets, Rodgers is a four-time MVP.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Rodgers intends to travel to Pittsburgh and join the club before the required minicamp the following week.
Week 1 NFL Betting Odds: Jets vs. Steelers
With the Steelers having moved on from Justin Fields, who is now, oddly, with the Jets, and Russell Wilson, who is now with the New York Giants, the Rodgers-to-Steelers rumors were one of the main stories this NFL off-season.
In the first game of the season, the Jets play the Steelers.
Rodgers informed Pat McAfee on April 17:
"I’m open to anything and attached to nothing. Retirement could still be a possibility, but right now my focus has been — and will continue to be — on my personal life. And that’s what I’ve told the coaches. There’s still conversations that are being had. It’s all been very honest lines of communication.”
Minimal Change in Betting Lines
Mason Rudolph is the Steelers' top quarterback, according to a cursory look at the depth chart.
During the previous season, Rodgers threw for the Jets for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Following the announcement, the Steelers' division odds at ESPN BET went from +550 to +500, and their chances of qualifying for the playoffs went from +150 to +140.
The over 8.5 price changed from +125 to +110, while the total wins remained unchanged. The first-week Steelers-Jets score changed from -2.5 to -3.According to a BetMGM representative, the Steelers were +4500 to win the Super Bowl at the time of the deal, and the odds remained unchanged because it was thought that Rodgers would join with the team. There hasn't been any change in the odds there either, according to a PointsBet Canada representative, as Rodgers was already factored into their odds at +6000 to win the Super Bowl.
"According to Caesars Digital Head of Football Joey Feazel: “No movement as this was already baked into our prices… as it was one of the worst kept secrets in sports.”
Since 2016, the Steelers have a 0–6 postseason record. Wilson is undoubtedly inferior to Rodgers, a zero-risk acquisition, but can Pittsburgh win a postseason game right now?
